GENERAL INFORMATION
Welcome to the Fall and Winter programs!!!! The programs have been expanded to meet the ever-growing needs of our community. It is our goal to offer quality recreation activities for all ages. We will expand our programs through the use of additional facilities, which will help us select suitable programs for the entire family. The fall and winter brochure is a cooperative endeavor between the City of Leominster Recreation Department, the School Department, and City of Leominster departments.

HIKING PROGRAMS


 Saturday, December 11th –Co-ed 9-Mile hike along the entire Monoosnoc trail. Meet at the Sholan Farms trailhead for parking and carpool to the end of West Street to begin the hike. People wishing to hike a shorter distance along the trail can make arrangements with Judith Sumner.

 Thursday, January 13th –Windblown x-country Skiing or snowshoeing. Meet at 9:00 a.m. at Barrett Park to carpool to N.H. to enjoy the groomed trails at this site until approximately 3:00 p.m. Windblown charges a per person fee for using this facility. Equipment will be available for rent for anyone wishing to try this fun and healthy activity.


REGISTRATIONS
Walk-in registrations begin on September 1, 2004. Our hours are Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., and Thursday until 5:30 p.m. Registrations are done on a first-come, first-serve basis, with priority given to Leominster residents. All registrations are NON-REFUNDABLE.

 Saturday, January 22nd-Mary Albertson Trail –Join us for a co-ed snowshoe hike or X-Country Skiing as we explore this new trail donated by Peter Bovenzi. Meet on Elm Street at the old Richard’s farm on the right before Richard’s Luxury Kennel and hike or ski to the distributing reservoir and back.

 Thursday, February 10th- Sholan Farm x-country skiing or snowshoeing. Meet at the Sholan Farm’s trail head on Pleasant Street in Leominster.

 Friday, February 25th –Co-ed Moonlight snowshoe hike. Meet at Leominster High School Parking on Granite Street near the flagpole area and be transported by the Recreation Department van to the end of Granite Street to the trailhead. 6:00- 9:00 p.m. Bring a flashlight and warm clothing.

REGISTRATION POLICIES
 Registration is done on a first- come, first serve basis, with priority given to Leominster residents.
 Non-residents wishing to register for a non-trip program, will be allowed only if space permits, with a $5.00 increase in fee. Non-residents will be placed on a waiting list and notified when space becomes available.
 For a trip program, a deadline will be set for six (6) weeks prior to the scheduled trip for residents to have priority over non-residents. After the deadline, registrations will then be open to everyone for one week. If the trip is not filled to capacity, it may be cancelled at that point and all money will be refunded. It is important to register early to ensure that a trip will take off.
 If registration is received by mail and there are no openings in that program, you will be put on a waiting list and contacted by phone. We will return your check if no openings arise.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

FLAG FOOTBALL AND CHEERLEADING
This after school program is designed to fill after school time constructively with activities that stress fundamentals, sportsmanship and school spirit for grades 5 and 6. The program will run at Southeast, Samoset School, and SkyView School.
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: September 3rd for all interested players.
DATES: September 7th – November 4th
TIME: Practices right after school on Tuesdays with games on Thursdays (Raindates for practices will be Wednesdays and Raindates for games will be Fridays)
GRADES: 5th and 6th graders from Southeast, Samoset, and SkyView Schools
COST: $25.00 for eight-week program

LATE REGISTRATION FEE OF $10.00 WILL BE APPLIED AFTER SEPTEMBER 3rd.

The Leominster Recreation Department reserves the right to correct any mistakes in this brochure at the time of print. We also reserve the right to cancel any program because of low enrollment, poor weather, etc.

ALL registrations are non-refundable unless:

1.) The Recreation Department cancels a program.
2.) You have mailed in a registration and no openings exist.
3.) **You request to withdraw from a program in
sufficient time that a replacement can be found and
no costs have been incurred because of you.

**A 30% handling fee will be charged if a refund becomes necessary. Please make note of this very important policy.

There will be a $25.00 service charge for all returned checks.

BABYSITTING COURSE WITH “THE RED CROSS”
Are you interested in becoming a certified babysitter? We are very fortunate once again to be working with the Red Cross to run this wonderful program. You will learn how to handle certain situations, develop emergency procedures, and provide activities to children. You will be required to attend the entire session of training to receive a certification card from the Red Cross stating you successfully completed the course. SITE: Barrett Park Office

KID CHEFS
A hands on learning experience in the kitchen. This new program offers cooking parties and classes, birthday parties, family events, etc. The program is designed for boys and girls ages 8- 14. There will be some special outings within the program too. Class sizes will be 6 per class. For more information, please call Mary Crowley at 978 466-1140.

WOMEN’S HIKING PROGRAMS

The women’s hiking series, led by members of the Leominster Recreation Department and the Leominster Land Trust Trails Committee in conjunction with Leominster Conservation Commission, offers monthly hikes, Cross-country skiing, and/or snow shoeing for women through Leominster’s Monoosnoc Hills and the surrounding area. Additional hikes may also be offered at various times of the year. Please call 978-534-7529 for monthly updates and meeting points. You may also call for information on rental of x-country ski equipment or snowshoes.

 Thursday, September 23rd –Hike a section of the Wapack trail (bring lunch to enjoy the views). Meet at Barrett Park in Leominster at 9:00 a.m. to car pool. Return time approximately 2:30 p.m.


 Thursday, October 14th -Mount Watatic in Ashburnham and Ashby (bring a lunch to enjoy the views from the top). Meet at Barrett Park at 9:00 a.m. to Car Pool to the trailhead. Return at approximately 3:00 p.m.

During the fall, hikers should wear hiking boots; bring water to drink, a light snack, binoculars, and bug repellant. Hikers gather informally and hike at your own risk.

COST: Free- please let the Recreation Department know if you are planning on attending each date just in case the site or dates are changed.


 Saturday, October 23rd – Johnny Appleseed Walk (family’s welcome)- Check in at Holy Family Church, 750 Union Street, Leominster at 9:00 a.m. and walk 5 or 10km up to Sholan Farm’s and back. Sholan Farm’s will be offering the 3rd annual Scarecrow Festival on this day. The Walk “n Mass Volkssport Club sponsors this hike. Come learn about the family Volkssport hikes offered in Massachusetts, United States and throughout the world. Call Jeannine Girouard at 978-874-2445 for more information on the Volkssport Club.

 Thursday, November 11th -Elm Street to Granite Street on the Monoosnoc trail. Meet at the power lines on Elm Street

 Friday, November 26th –Co-ed Full Moon hike. Meet at Parmenter Road gate at 6:00 p.m. and hike the Leominster State Forest until 9:00 p.m. Bring a flashlight and warm clothing. This hike will not be held if there is a cloud cover or rain.

MEDICAL POLICY
The City of Leominster Recreation Department will not prohibit any persons participation in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or other partici-pants in that activity. A participant who has been notified by a qualified medical professional, that he/she has a medical condition that is likely to cause injury to themselves or other participants, is obligated to inform the Leominster Recreation Department. This should be done at the time of registration and willingly withdraw from the program and/or activity if requested by the Department. You must also sign a release form for any activity you may be participating in and release the Recreation Department from any responsibility if an accident were to occur.

JOHNNY APPLESEED FESTIVAL

Time: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
The City of Leominster will be celebrating Johnny Appleseed with a festival to take place in downtown Leominster, with numerous activities, booths, crafts, moonwalks, foods, performers, and more! We will sponsor a food booth, Kiddie Land area, Mums for sale and more. Stop by the Leominster Recreation booths and check us out.

3RD ANNUAL SCARECROW FESTIVAL AT SHOLAN FARMS
Saturday, October 23, 2004 and
Sunday, October, 24, 2004
Once again, Sholan Farms will be hosting its 3rd annual Scarecrow Festival. This spectacular event will last for an entire weekend. On Saturday, there will be a variety of events going on such as the popular scarecrow contest. Pick up your materials before the weekend or show up on Saturday and create a one of a kind scare-crow. Scarecrows are judged in a variety of categories, so be creative and have fun. Other events to take place on Saturday and Sunday include hayrides through the orchard, entertainment, and more. “JOHNNY APPLESEED WALK”

The Walk’n Mass Volkssport Club, the Leominster Recreation Department, and the Friends of Sholan Farms invite you to participate in the “Johnny Appleseed” walk in Leominster, Massachusetts, the birthplace of John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed. This walk is held in conjunction with the Sholan Farms’ 3rd Annual Scarecrow Festival. Anyone may participate regardless of age or physical condition. The 5km (3.1 miles) and the 10 km (6.2 miles) walks are non ¾ competitive, follow a marked route, and are accomplished at your own pace. The 5 km route is suitable for strollers, not for wheelchairs. The 10km is not suitable for either strollers or wheelchairs. Children under the age of twelve must be accompanied by an adult. Leashed pets are welcomed; clean-up laws apply.

HALLOWEEN FESTIVAL
Join us for a Halloween festival in conjunction with Sholan Farms with tricks, treats, a parade and more! Dress in your favorite costume as we parade through the city. It is a traditionally safe way to celebrate the day. More details to follow. Be on the look out!

IRISH COUNTRY CHRISTMAS

BASKETBALL CLINIC
A one-day basketball clinic will be held with Steve Dubzinski and the Recreation Department. This clinic will get you ready for the basketball season as it will fine tune skills and get you into shape. If you are a basketball fanatic this program is for you.

BAY-BLADES ICE SKATING

Learn to Skate program is an excellent introduction to ice skating for children ages 6 and up who want to learn the basic skills necessary to enjoy recreational ice skating or enter into a youth hockey or figure skating program in the future. Each Learn-to-Skate class consists of a 25 minute lesson featuring a 10:1 skater to instructor ratio.

BARRETT PARK ACTIVITIES
Free Ice Skating on Barrett Pond
The Recreation Department will be clearing the ice on Barrett Pond and lighting it for night skating. Skating will begin once the ice has been declared safe for skating. We ask that you watch for the “NO” skating signs and please use all precaution while on the ice. Those areas not cleared are not to be used for skating. For more information on skating and conditions please listen to the radio, look in the newspapers or call the Recreation Department office. This area will be lit evenings until 9:00 p.m. during the skating season.

Cross Country Skiing or Snowshoeing
Put your cross-country skis on and enjoy the Winter Wonderland at Barrett Park or Prospect Park. Both parks have the ideal setting for outdoor group outings or family parties. Call the office for additional information.

CREATIVE MOVIE MAKING
Children now have the opportunity to create and star in their very own movie! The Leominster Recreation Department and Creative Theatre are presenting a fall program designed to expose children to the craft of movie making. The first couple classes are dedicated to developing the movie. The groups participate in creative exercises designed to explore character and story development. At the end of day one the movie’s outline is discussed. Once the outline is finished, time is spent rehearsing the movie. Storyboards are laid out in preparation for shooting. Next the cameras arrive. Students have the opportunity to act in the movie and see how their storyboards come to life. The final day for DVD extras-interviews, “alternate endings,” and any other fun things the cast and crew would like to include on the final DVD. A wrap party for the cast and crew takes place on the last day. After post-production, the students will receive their original movie on DVD! (About four months)

Ice Skating at Carter Park
This year a skating rink will be put at Carter Park for public use. Free public ice-skating will be available at this portable ice rink set up by the Leominster Recre-ation Department. Contact the office for ice conditions.

Ice Skating Party
This free activity will take place at Barrett Park. This is an opportunity for you to spend quality time with your child. Skate to music, rest by the wood stove, enjoy a hot cup of cocoa or sit and enjoy the bon-fire. The Friends of Barrett Park, Leominster Recreation Department, and The Leominster Emergency Management have sponsored this program for several years.

ADULT PROGRAMS
MEN’S FLAG FOOTBALL LEAGUE
The Recreation Department is interested in starting a men’s flag football league. Requests have been made and we are willing to try.
Team rosters of fifteen maximum, eight minimum, will be required. Games will be played on Wednesday nights. To register for this program send in a roster to the Recreation Department office no later than September 8, 2004. Games will begin the week of the 15th.
TEAM COST: $150.00
PLACE: Barrett Park backfield
TIME: 6:30 p.m. game time

CO-ED BASKETBALL LEAGUE
Pick-up games are held weekly. This will be a co-ed run program for women over 25 and men over 30. Join the great fun and exercise. League players will not be allowed to participate. Female participation is encouraged. Payment must be made at the Recreation Department prior to participating. Enrollment numbers will be limited, so register early.
NIGHTS: Thursdays, 8:00 – 9:30
DATES: December 9 – March 24
COST: $40.00 ($45.00 non-residents)

Payments will not be accepted at the gym.

SPECIAL EVENTS

HAUNTED TRAIL
The Leominster Recreation Department will reenact a haunted trail at Barrett Park. Look for more information as plans are still underway. So please mark your calendars!
DATES: October 29th and 30th 2004 COST: $5.00
TIME: 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. SITE: Barrett Park

NORTH POLE CALLING
Run cooperatively with the Leominster Senior Citizen Center, this very popular program gives children, ages 3 - 6 the opportunity to speak directly to Santa Claus at the North Pole. Fliers are distributed through the schools or by calling the Recreation Department office. The snow date will be the next night.
DATE: Tuesday, December 14th

COST: $3.00 per family AGES: 3-6
TIME: Between 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL LEAGUE
This league will run for10 weeks, which will include
8 weeks of games with two weeks for make-ups and playoffs. It will run from December 6 through February 17 on Mondays and Thursdays. We will need
at least 8 teams to play. There will be no games during school vacation week or holidays. Games will be played at Northwest School. Registration deadline is November 12, 2004. The cost of a team is $400.00 or $45.00 per player for individual sign-up and we will place on a team. This program is for men over 20. Register today!

CIRCLE (NO-PARTNER) DANCING
Join Hearts and Hands as we dance to beautiful music from other lands. International folk dances of peace and sister/brotherhood. Gentle simple movements-all dances taught. No experience is necessary. It is teens to elders. The instructor is registered nurse, Molly Bock. Register at the Leominster Recreation Department today.

TOGETHER AT TATA’S AUDITORIUM” WITH
MAD SCIENCE
Join us and the Leominster Cultural Commission for a magnificent Mad Science experience. The Mad Science Company will enlighten you with the show called “Up, Up and Away”. Everyone will experience the principles of air pressure in a variety of ways. You will see the creation of a hot air balloon, giant smoke rings generated by a vortex generator, and a hover craft in action. We will see you there!

EASTER EGG HUNT
The Easter Bunny invites all children, ages 2-6 to celebrate springtime and join the annual search for eggs hidden behind the Eagles hall property including the hunt for SPECIAL EGGS, which can be turned in for prizes to the lucky finders.

BASKETBALL PROGRAMS
GENERAL YOUTH BASKETBALL INFORMATION
Registrations will be accepted beginning September 1st and ending on September 24th. Basketball registration will also take place at Barrett Park on September 9, 2004 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. and September 11, 2004 from 9:00 a.m. – 12 noon.
Register by completing the form in this booklet and mailing it along with a check payable to Leominster Recreation Department.
The draft is MANDATORY for all players in the Girls and Boys, Biddy and Intermediate programs. Our program will be on a first come first served basis limited to Leominster Residents first. Draft day will be Saturday, September 25th at Leominster High. Location is subject to change due to gym availability.

MITE BASKETBALL LEAGUE
BOYS AND GIRLS
This instructional league features two divisions for boys and two divisions for girls for the beginning player with emphasis on basic skills, fundamentals, and enjoyment of the game. During the season, each child will be given an equal amount of playing time. The program begins in November and runs through February. COST: $55.00 per person
GRADES: 1 & 2 (Pee Wee Division)
3 & 4 (Junior Division)
DEADLINE: Register by mail or at Barrett Park
GAMES/PRACTICES: Gyms and times to be determined based on availability from the schools.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
(BIDDY AND INTERMEDIATE)
This league is moderately competitive and emphasis is placed on teaching basic basketball skills as part of an organized league where each girl plays at least half the game. The league is divided into two divisions by age. Grades 5-6 will be in the girl’s biddy division and grades 7-8 will be in the girl’s intermediate division.

BOYS BASKETBALL
(BIDDY AND INTERMEDIATE)
This very popular program stresses a positive overall experience with emphasis on basic fundamentals, strategy and teamwork. The program is designed to give all players equal playing time while also meeting new friends. This program features two leagues. Boy’s Biddy (Grades 5-6) and Boy’s Intermediate (Grades 7-8). New teams are formed each year to ensure balance and competitiveness.
GRADES: Boy’s- 5-6 Biddy, 7-8 Intermediate
DEADLINE: Register by Friday, September 24, 2004
Those who register by the registration deadline and attend the draft will be placed on teams. Placement on teams is on first come first served basis with limited enrollment. All those registered will be contacted by phone by their perspective coaches after the draft.

We are offering two high school leagues, one for girls and one for boys. We need at least four teams to offer the girl’s program. You don't need to be a basketball star to play. High School team players will not be accepted. Enrollment will be limited to a first come first served basis.

Exercise Program

Adult Exercise
This program is designed to give participants a fun workout to music for a great aerobic workout. Classes will include aerobics, hand weights, interval training and more. Paula M. Skehan will instruct the classes at Fallbrook School. Participants should bring a bottle of water, an exercise mat or towel for floor exercises.
SESSION I: Begins September 14th – Nov. 18th for ten weeks at Fallbrook School
SESSION II: Begins January 4th – March 3rd for eight weeks at Fallbrook School
SESSION III: Begins March 15th – May 12th for eight weeks at Fallbrook School

to the Recreation Department prior to each session. The instructor will also accept registrations on the first night at the class.

RIVER CRUISE AND STEAM TRAIN RIDE

Deluxe motor-coach transportation throughout. Beverages and donuts served upon departure. Enjoy a 10 mile scenic train ride aboard the nineteenth-century Steam Train. Then relax on a one hour cruise on the beautiful Connecticut River aboard a Riverboat, past hilltop mansions and the Gillette Castle. Woman's Monthly Hikes

The women’s hiking series, led by members of the Leominster Recreation Department and the Leominster Land Trust Trails Committee in conjunction with Leominster Conservation Commission, offers monthly hikes, Cross-country skiing, and/or snow shoeing for women through Leominster’s Monoosnoc Hills and the surrounding area. Additional hikes may also be offered at various times of the year. (Call 978-534-7529 for monthly updates and meeting points. You may also call for information on rental of x-country ski equipment or snowshoes.) During the fall, hikers should wear hiking boots; bring water to drink, a light snack, binoculars, and bug repellant. Hikers gather informally and hike at your own risk.

COST: Free- please let the Recreation Department know if you are planning on attending each date just in case the site or dates are changed.

Thursday, September 23rd –Hike a section of the Wapack trail (bring lunch to enjoy the views). Meet at Barrett Park in Leominster at 9:00 a.m. to car pool. Return time approximately 2:30 p.m.

Thursday, October 14th -Mount Watatic in Ashburnham and Ashby (bring a lunch to enjoy the views from the top). Meet at Barrett Park at 9:00 a.m. to Car Pool to the trailhead. Return at approximately 3:00 p.m.

Saturday, October 23rd – Johnny Appleseed Walk (family’s welcome)- Check in at Holy Family Church, 750 Union Street, Leominster at 9:00 a.m. and walk 5 or 10km up to Sholan Farm’s and back. Sholan Farm’s will be offering the 3rd annual Scarecrow Festival on this day. The Walk “n Mass Volkssport Club sponsors this hike. Come learn about the family Volkssport hikes offered in Massachusetts, United States and throughout the world. Call Jeannine Girouard at 978-874-2445 for more information on the Volkssport Club.

Thursday, November 11th -Elm Street to Granite Street on the Monoosnoc trail. Meet at the power lines on Elm Street

Friday, November 26th –Co-ed Full Moon hike. Meet at Parmenter Road gate at 6:00 p.m. and hike the Leominster State Forest until 9:00 p.m. Bring a flashlight and warm clothing. This hike will not be held if there is a cloud cover or rain.

Saturday, December 11th –Co-ed 9-Mile hike along the entire Monoosnoc trail. Meet at the Sholan Farms trailhead for parking and carpool to the end of West Street to begin the hike. People wishing to hike a shorter distance along the trail can make arrangements with Judith Sumner.

Thursday, January 13th –Windblown x-country Skiing or snowshoeing. Meet at 9:00 a.m. at Barrett Park to carpool to N.H. to enjoy the groomed trails at this site until approximately 3:00 p.m. Windblown charges a per person fee for using this facility. Equipment will be available for rent for anyone wishing to try this fun and healthy activity.

Saturday, January 22nd-Mary Albertson Trail –Join us for a co-ed snowshoe hike or X-Country Skiing as we explore this new trail donated by Peter Bovenzi. Meet on Elm Street at the old Richard’s farm on the right before Richard’s Luxury Kennel and hike or ski to the distributing reservoir and back.

Thursday, February 10th- Sholan Farm x-country skiing or snowshoeing. Meet at the Sholan Farm’s trail head on Pleasant Street in Leominster.

Friday, February 25th –Co-ed Moonlight snowshoe hike. Meet at Leominster High School Parking on Granite Street near the flagpole area and be transported by the Recreation Department van to the end of Granite Street to the trailhead. 6:00- 9:00 p.m. Bring a flashlight and warm clothing.
