Welcome to a “Rock-n-Roll” Summer!!! The programs for this Summer Season have been expanded to meet the ever-growing needs of our community. It is our goal to offer quality recreation activities for all ages. We will expand our programs through the use of additional facilities, which will help us select suitable programs for the entire family. The “Rock-n-Roll Summer Theme” for our upcoming summer programs is a cooperative endeavor between the City of Leominster Recreation Department, the School Department, the Public Library, and the City of Leominster.

REGISTRATIONS
Walk-in registrations begin on April 5, 2004. Our hours are Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., and Thursday until 5:30 p.m. Registrations are done on a first-come, first-serve basis, with priority given to Leominster residents.

MEDICAL POLICY
The City of Leominster Recreation Department will not prohibit any person’s participation in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or other participants in that activity. A participant, who has been notified by a qualified medical professional, that he/she has a medical condition that is likely to cause injury to themselves or other participants, is obligated to inform the Leominster Recreation Department. This should be done at the time of registration and willingly withdraw from the program and/or activity if requested by the Department. You must also sign a release form for any activity you may be participating in and release the Recreation Department from any responsibility if an accident were to occur.

Registration Information and Teen Programs
 
REGISTRATION POLICIES
* Registration is done on a first- come, first serve basis, with priority given to Leominster residents.
* Non-residents wishing to register for a non-trip program will be allowed only if space permits, with a $5.00 increase in fee. Non-residents will be placed on a waiting list and notified when space becomes available.
* For a trip program, a deadline will be set for six (6) weeks prior to the scheduled trip for residents to have priority over non-residents. After the deadline, registrations will then be open to everyone for one week. If the trip is not filled to capacity, it may be cancelled at that point and all money will be refunded. It is important to register early to ensure that a trip will take off.
? If registration is received by mail and there are no openings in that program, you will be put on a waiting list and contacted by phone. We will return your checks if no openings arise.

The Leominster Recreation Department reserves the right to correct any mistakes in this brochure at the time of print. We also reserve the right to cancel any program because of low enrollment, poor weather, etc.
ALL registrations are non-refundable unless:
1.) The Recreation Department cancels a program.
2.) You have mailed in a registration and no openings exist.
3.) **You request to withdraw from a program in sufficient time that a replacement can be found and no costs have been incurred because of you.

**A 30% handling fee will be charged if a refund becomes necessary. Please make note of this very important policy.
There will be a $25.00 service charge for all returned checks.

TEEN ADVENTURES

Teen adventures this summer will run as a trip program. Trips will be taken on Tuesdays and Thursdays for four weeks. You can choose the trips you would like to register. A complete list of trips is below. Choose one, two, or all five trips! Each trip will go out in our van and chaperoned by Leominster Recreation Department staff. TEEN JOB OPPORTUNITY
Last year, this program was able to help out the community in a variety of ways. If you are between the ages of 12 and 18, like to work, and are interested in making some extra money this might be the opportunity you have been waiting for. Are you an adult who is looking to have odd jobs done around your houses? If yes, then stop by the Recreation Department office and fill out the Adult Job form to list the job you would like done. If you’re a teen and are interested in working then stop by the Recreation Department and fill out a Teen Job Application for a job you might be interested in doing (parents must co-sign). There are lots of people in Leominster who need help with yard work, companions, computers, dog walking, babysitting, and various other jobs. Let’s help each other!

Fishing Derby
It’s back for another year, our annual fishing derby. Bring your gear to Barrett Park and cast away! Our sponsors include the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, Leominster Department of Public Works, Friends of Barrett Park, and the Leominster Recreation Department. Everything you catch must be kept, so be sure to bring your pail! Bring your own fishing gear! Prizes to be awarded at 11:15. a.m. Three trout limit!

Hershey Track and Field
Area youth boys’ and girls’ have an opportunity to participate and compete in track and field events, similar to those in the Olympics. Track events include the 50, 100,
200, 400 meter dash, the 800 and 1600 meter run, and the 4 x 100 relay. Field events include the softball throw and standing long jump. Results are sent to the Hershey Track and Field, where they determine top regional winners. Top regional winners go on to compete at state finals. We have had great success in this program and have gone to state finals every year. You must bring your birth certificate with you when you register. Open to surrounding communities.

3RD ANNUAL
APPLE BLOSSOM FESTIVAL
The festival is a civic celebration organized and operated by the Friends of Sholan Farm. It is funded through a membership drive, ticket sales to many activities, sponsorships, and souvenir sales. This is an event for the whole family to enjoy. Many of the activities will include crafters, pony rides, music, and food. New this year, Pack 38 will have a Butterfly Release. Join us for such a wonderful community event.

Johnny Appleseed Festival

The City of Leominster will be celebrating Johnny Appleseed with a festival to take place in downtown Leominster, with numerous activities, booths, crafts, moonwalks, foods, performers, and more! Stop by the Leominster Recreation booth and check us out.

Join the festivities as they continue another day with a city parade. There will be floats, bands, children, and of course, Johnny Appleseed. Join in on the celebration.

Halloween Parade Place: Sholan Farms

Once again, join us for a Halloween festival with tricks, treats, a parade and more! Dress in your favorite costume as we parade up to Sholan Farms. It is a traditionally safe way to celebrate the day. More details to follow with a time and location! Be on the look out!
New ideas being researched more information will be in our Fall and Winter brochure.

1st Annual Golf Tournament
The Leominster Recreation Department will be hosting its first ever golf tournament. Enjoy a fantastic day on the green with friends, colleagues, and family. There will be coffee and danish available in the morning and lunch in the afternoon. Prizes and raffles will be given out too. This event is a wonderful opportunity to help out the community and enjoy a day of golfing. Proceeds will benefit various programs for the community and sponsor children to attend youth programs. We are also looking for businesses to sponsor a hole. The tournament will be held Friday, July 23rd at the Woods of Westminster Course in Westminster. Be on the look out for flyers with more detail or call the Recreation Office!

PICK YOUR OWN APPLES AND PUMPKINS
The picking season runs from September through October: Days/Hours Wednesday through Sunday 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Opening Weekend is HARVEST FESTIVAL, September 4th and 5th.

3rd ANNUAL SCARECROW FESTIVAL
Join us for another spectacular event. View and vote for your favorite homemade scarecrow, or take a hayride through the haunted orchard. Enjoy free live entertainment on Saturday, great food, many interactive children’s events, and much, much more!

Swim Programs and Lesson Information
 
SWIM PROGRAMS
We are very excited and enthusiastic to announce that this year we will be running the pool located on Viscoloid Ave in Leominster, MA. The pool season will open on June 19, 2004 and close on August 21, 2004.
With this acquisition, we can successfully offer the residents of Leominster a variety of water activities for all ages. Such activities will include swim lessons, family passes, water volleyball, water aerobics, and possibly even a swim team. We will have Red-Cross certified lifeguards on site at all times.

POOL HOURS
Daily- 12:00 – 6:00 p.m. Sunday - Saturday
Family swim will be 6:00- 7:00 p.m. weeknights.
Swim Lessons will be Mon- Fri 9:00 a.m.- Noon
Class schedules available at the Recreation Depart.

FEES
Daily Swim-$3.00 resident/ $5.00 non-resident.
Family Season Pass: $45.00 for family up to five (additional $5.00 per family member above 5)
Swim Lesson: $40.00 per session (Red Cross Cards will be given at the end of each session)

GROUP RATES
We will take groups of twenty-five or more if registered one week in advance for a discounted price. Call with group numbers and a price will be quoted according to group size and hours.

Family Swim Pass
We will once again offer family passes for swimming. The cost is $45.00 for a family of five for the season and an additional $5.00 per family member will be charged for additional family members over 5. Family passes cannot be used to drop children off for the day without adult supervision. An adult must accompany children 16 years and younger.

Water Aerobics
We will be offering water aerobics classes if an instructor can be found. We are looking for a certified water aerobics instructor to teach adult and senior citizen classes along with young adult classes. If certified and interested please contact the Leominster Recreation Department at 978-534-7529. We are excited to offer such a program, please help us out.

Water Volleyball
A fun league with regular games to be held weekly during the day for children and evenings for adults. Sign up individually or put in a team. If we cannot make enough teams we will hold pick-up games. More information forthcoming.
Cost for individual: $ 35.00
Team cost: $100.00

SWIM LESSONS
Red Cross swim lessons will once again be offered by the Leominster Recreation Department at the Pool on Viscoloid Ave. Certified water safety instructors will provide these classes and certificates will be given at the completion of each session. Learn to Swim Class Descriptions are given below for sign-ups at the Recreation Department office. Classes will be held Monday – Friday for two weeks and there will be three different sessions to choose from. See dates and times below.
-Level 1: (Water Exploration) The objective of this level is to feel comfortable in the water. There is NO parent participation in this class. Recommended for ages 4 and up, some 3’s if parent feels the child can participate without a parent in the water.

-Level 2: (Primary Skills) For students who have completed Level 1, or who can do the following:
1. Fully submerge face for 3 seconds
2. Bounce up and down in chest deep water for ten times
3. Supported float on front and back, blow bubbles
4. Walk 5 yards in chest deep water, maintaining balance
5. Supported kicking on front and back

-Level 3: (Stroke Readiness) For those students who have completed Level 2, or who can do the following:
1. Hold breath and fully submerge head for three seconds
2. Submerge and retrieve object in chest deep water
3. Explore deep water with support
4. Front float unsupported for 5 seconds
5. Bob ten times
6. Flutter kick on front and back, support optional
7. Combined stroke (Crawl) for 5 yards
8. Back crawl for 5 yards
-Level 4: (Stroke Development) For those students who have completed level 3, or who can do the following:
1. Retrieve object from bottom in chest deep water
2. Bob 15 times head completely submerged
3. Jump into deep water
4. Front and back floats with glide from a push off
5. Swim front crawl for ten yards
6. Elementary backstroke kick for 10 yards
7. Tread water

-Level 5: (Stroke Refinement) For those students who have completed level 4, or who can do the following:
1. Deep water bobbing
2. Standing front dive
3. Breaststroke kick 10 yards
4. Elementary backstroke – 10 yards
5. 25 yards front and back crawl
6. Scissors kick – 10 yards

-Level 6: (Skill Proficiency) Purpose for this course is to develop maximum efficiency and endurance for strokes, introduce surface dives and introduce flip turns.

Level 7: (Advanced Skills) Purpose for this course is to encourage lifetime fitness, refine strokes learned in previous levels, develop springboard diving skills, and teach advanced rescue skills.

Playground Programs
 
PLAYGROUND PROGRAMS
Financial assistance for the summer playground program is funded through the City of Leominster/Department of Housing and Urban Development. Financial assistance application forms for income eligible residents are available at the Recreation Department. (TAX INFORMATION REQUIRED.)

“ROCK-N-ROLL”
PLAYGROUND PROGRAM

Join us for our fun-filled summer program for children ages’ 6- 9. This program will include a variety of activities such as arts & crafts, drama, singing, athletics, reading, and some educational programs. Our well known, exciting, Monday through Friday program, will run for six (6) weeks beginning on Monday June 28- Friday August 6. There is a sign in, sign out policy, where parents/guardians must physically sign their child in and out with their assigned counselor. We continue with this policy to ensure safety. Children will rotate through various activities throughout the day. Wednesday will be designated for field trips, some at additional cost. “We will also continue to bring new and exciting programs to the children who attend this program.

The theme this year is “Rock-n-Roll Summer!” We will incorporate activities according to this theme, allowing children to use their imagination to explore. Some activities will be pre-planned, while others will be optional for participants to choose from. Activities are subject to change without notice. Program hours are Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. We will be closed on Monday, July 5th. This will not affect the first week’s fee. All payments must be paid in full before a child can attend the program. Fieldtrips will be taken on Wednesdays, with an additional fee per trip. We look forward to this summer with you and your child/ren.

POWER OF PRESCHOOLERS
“Power of Preschoolers” is back for another year! This program is designed for ages 2.9-5. (All preschoolers must be potty trained.) We split groups into appropriate age levels to meet individual needs of the children. The children will interact with other children, gaining social experience, and will engage in activities including arts n’ crafts, sports, drama, reading, playtime, and more,

INTERMEDIATE ADVENTURES
“Intermediate Adventures” is designed for 10-12 year olds. It is a place where participants have choices built into a structured day. Activities will be pre-planned to a certain extent, allowing room for participant input once the summer begins. Activities will still include sports’, arts and crafts, and more. There will be some field trips, at an additional cost. Join us for a sensational summer. A complete calendar, with fieldtrips and preplanned activities, will be available at registration time, so please ask for one. DATES: 6 wks (June 28 –August 6)

TIME: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. AGES: 10 – 12

EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM
Any child needing extend day hours can attend the Leominster High School Playground Program or the Skyview site, if between the ages of 2.9-12. This year extended day will be available for the PRE-SCHOOL too. There will be NO transportation of children from other programs to extended day. The extended day hours will be from 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Registration for this program is required. Payment is expected at time of registration to secure your spot. AGES: 6 - 12
COST: $13 per day in addition to program fees

“SPORTS MANIA” PROGRAM
Back by popular demand! Due to the overwhelming success of last year’s program, we are bringing it back for another summer. This program will run on two-week intervals and offer a variety of sports-instruction to children ages 8 – 12. Children will learn instruction in several areas and use their talents to have weekly tournaments and games the second week of their program. Instruction will be geared towards sports such as field hockey, basketball, soccer, baseball/ softball, lacrosse and more. Staff that serve this site are all talented local athletes that strive to demonstrate the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship on and off the field. Sign-ups are weekly this year like other programs. Some field trips will be available, at additional costs. Closed July 5th

Youth Programs
 
COOKING INSTRUCTION
This after school program will run for six weeks, one day per week. Join us in learning the basics cooking. You will be able to make simple meals and desserts from scratch. Our first session was such a huge success; we are bringing it back for another session. Our head chef, Melissa Campolattero will instruct this program. She is creative, patient, and of course a great cook! Sign up today!

BABYSITTING COURSE
WITH THE RED CROSS

Are you interested in becoming a certified babysitter? We are very fortunate once again to be working with the Red Cross to run this wonderful program. You will learn how to handle certain situations, develop emergency procedures, and provide activities to children. You will be required to attend the entire session of training to receive a certification card from the Red Cross stating you successfully completed the course. (Each session is limited to 12.)

BEAUTIFUL HEALTHY YOU !!
Girls, learn to be your personal best!!! You will try tae-bo type kick-boxing, strength training, pilates, core conditioning, yoga like stretches and relaxation breathing to learn how to stay fit and healthy. Each day, there will be a discussion on healthy eating choices and an introduction of beauty and make-up tips for a natural healthy look. Have fun learning how to stay fit with friends in a comfortable atmosphere for girls,

HIP HOP – MODERN DANCE
We are very fortunate this year, to have Jennifer Cafarella again. She is a teacher at Dance Down Under in Ashby, MA. This dance program will offer beginning skills as well as some hip-hop and modern dance. Ms. Jennifer has danced Granite State Ballet, Twayla Tharp, and more. She also works with special needs children and adults, teaching dance and sign language. These classes will take place at Leominster High School. Each session is two weeks long. HORSEBACK RIDING
With continued success, we are continuing our horseback riding program with PINE FALL FARM in Lunenburg. Instruction will include riding skills, horse care, cantering, and more! Join us again for another yee-hah summer.

SCIENSATIONAL WORKSHOP
Fossil Hunt-Rocks and Minerals Workshop
Are you interested in digging for dinosaur fossils? Or maybe you have an interest in rocks and minerals. Kids will do simulated fossil excavations with over 100 fossils, dirt, and of course----lots of fun! Discover an actual dinosaur bone and more! You will also be able to make a fossil plaster replica of a cave bear tooth, and a Tyrannosaurus Rex tooth. You will also be able to work with the mineral collection and identify many different types. The fun goes on. You will get an opportunity to grow crystals, and have so much fun while learning. (A minimum of 12 participants and a maximum of 25 participants)

CLAYTIME
Claytime Pottery out of Worcester will join us again this year to offer two different programs for children. In the first program, children will be able to choose from a variety of animal critters to paint. After painting their critter, it will then be fired. They will have a creative piece of art to take home. In the second program, children will design a 9 oz mug. After designing it, it will be fired. It will then be ready for use. Each of these programs is hands-on and creative.

VOLLEYBALL

We are very excited to have this new program.
Come learn how to play volleyball or come enhance your skills in this new instructional program. Learn positions, how to serve and play as a team. Gary Heikennen will be the instructor for this program and we are pleased to have him.

WHALOM DRIVING RANGE
Join Teaching Professional, John Ross, for three weeks of small group instruction with more personalized instruction in the category suited to your ability. He will provide one-on-one and help you with your game of golf. Additional sessions can be added if warranted.

This league will be held at Mulligan’s Miniature Golf Center. It is for children ages 9-14. Come be a part of this great new program. Children are placed in groups of four to five. Players compete to shoot their best scores on eighteen holes. Participants will receive a free game coupon at the end of the program along with additional prizes.

JUNIOR GOLF PROGRAM
Lancaster Golf Center will offer a 5-session program with their Teaching Professionals providing junior golfers with quality instruction in a relaxed and fun setting. The goal of the program will be to introduce the game to new golfers and to improve the game of juniors who may have had some previous experience. Each student receives a FREE drink during break time and a FREE ice cream from our own “on-site” Ice Cream truck after each day’s session. The final day will be a 3 hour program which will include playing a supervised round of golf on our 9 Hole Par 3 “Links” course followed by a barbeque lunch on the clubhouse deck.

KARATE
Grandmaster Kevin Bliss will be offering karate instruction for the Recreation Department. Interested participants can attend monthly or weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursday during the summer months. (See dates and times below.) TENNIS INSTRUCTION
Don Franciosi is returning for another year of instructing tennis lessons for children at a beginner or intermediate stage. COACH MAZZAFERRO’S
BASKETBALL INSTRUCTION

Ron Mazzaferro, teacher and former coach of Leominster High School and present coach of Groton School is here to offer a four – day program to area youth at two different grade levels. Program 1 will be a fundamental program. It will run in the mornings for youth in grades 4-8. Participants will learn or brush up on their skills in the game of basketball, along with basics, drills, and more! Program 2 will be competitive for the more experienced player in grades 9-12. You will have an opportunity to improve on your one on one, two on two, three on three, and intense five on five games. Through this program, coach Mazzaferro will make a donation to the American Cancer Society. Show your support while having fun! Dribble your way to registration.

Movie Making With Creative Theatre
 

Children now have the opportunity to create and star in their very own movie! The Leominster Recreation Department and Creative Theatre are presenting a summer program designed to expose children to the craft of movie making.

The first week is dedicated to developing the movie.
Day one- the groups participate in creative exercises designed to explore character and story development. As the end of day one the movie’s outline is discussed. Once the outline is finished, days two through four are spent work shopping and rehearsing the movie. Day five storyboards are laid out in preparation for shooting.

The second week, the cameras arrive. Students have the opportunity to act in the movie and see how their storyboards come to life. The final day for DVD extras-interviews, “alternate endings,” and any other fun things the cast and crew would like to include on the final DVD. A wrap party for the cast and crew takes place on Day 10 also.

After post-production, the students will receive their original movie on DVD! (about four months)
