Hikes /Outdoor Events |
The Leominster Land Trust and the Leominster Recreation
Department are co-partnering in planning hikes and trail
work days for the 2006 calendar year. Additional events may
be offered at various times.
COST: Free (unless noted) -Hikers gather informally and hike
at your own risk
Please let us know if you are planning on joining us on each
hike so we can notify you of any changes in the schedule.
Please watch the local newspaper or call the Recreation
Department at 978-534-7529 for an update on the hiking
schedule.
Cancellations: Hikes are canceled if it rains. Please call
Deanne Comeau at 978-537-3018 or the Recreation Department
office for an update
We recommend that hikers wear proper hiking gear; take a
lunch or snack, water, sunscreen and insect repellent.
Sat., April 22 Petersham- Nichewag
Trail
9:00 a.m.
Participants will meet at the Recreation Department Office
parking lot at Barrett Park for 9:00 a.m. to car-pool to the
properties of the Trustees of Reservations in Petersham, MA.
Beginning at the Nichewag Trail Terminus, we will hike
through the Swift River Tract to North Common Meadows. Dick
O’Brien, Mass. Regional Director of the Trustees of
Reservations will lead. Hiking time is about 4 hours.
Sat., May 20th – Wachusett
Reservoir
8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Participants will meet at the Recreation Department Office
parking lot at Barrett Park for 8:30 a.m. to carpool to the
Wachusett Reservoir until 12:00 p.m. Kelly Freda, an
Environmental Analyst for Department of Environmental
Conservation and Recreation and a member of the Leominster
Conservation Commission, will lead. On the hike she will
talk about the Wildlife in the area and the history of the
Wachusett Reservoir. It is a gentle walk; hikers of all ages
are welcome. Please bring water, snack, sunscreen, bug
repellent and binoculars. Eagles and loons are now present
there.
Sat., June 3th- National Trails Day
9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
This is an opportunity to get the trail in order for the
summer. Trail work will be done in groups on particular
segments from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Participants will meet
at Barrett Park to receive assignments, take gloves, loppers
or your favorite trail tool. Please consider the importance
of our trails- volunteers needed.
Sat., August 12th Monoosnoc Morning
Trail Hike
9:00 a.m.
Hike the newest section of the Monoosnoc trail from Samoset
School to Sholan Farms and then to Wachusett Street. Meet at
the Samoset School Parking lot near the upper soccer fields
on DeCicco Drive at 9:00 a.m.
THE WOMEN’S HIKING SERIES,
led by members of the Leominster Recreation Department and
the Leominster Land Trust Trails Committee in conjunction
with Leominster Conservation Commis-sion, offers hikes for
women through Leominster Monoosnoc Hills once a month.
Additional hikes may also be offered at various times of the
year. (Call 978-534-7529 for monthly updates and meeting
points.) Hikers should wear hiking boots; bring water to
drink, a light snack, binoculars, and bug repellant.
DAYS: Leominster Hikes are held the 2nd Thursday of every
month
TIME: 9:00 a.m. until approximately noon

April 13th –Exchange Street Beech Forest
Meet at the end of Exchange Street
May 11th –High Ridge Conservation Area in Westminster; Meet
at Barrett Park and car pool to trail in Westminster
June 8th – Moore State Park on Route 31 in Paxton, MA, Hike
one of the trails on this 700-acre former estate while
enjoying the views of the pond, water-falls, brook, blooming
rhododendrons and azaleas. Meet at Barrett Park in
Leominster to car pool.
July 13th -Wachusett Street to Elm Street on the Monoosnoc
trail. Meet on Wachusett Street at trail
Aug. 10th -Barre Falls Dam-Hike the trails through sections
of the 557 acres of Federal public land
Meet at Barrett Park to Car Pool to Barre.
September 14th - Elm Street to West Street on the Monoosnoc
trail. Meet at the end of West Street and car pool to Elm
Street trail.
