Applications are also available at the Recreation Department at 40 Barrett Parkway between the hours of 8:30 am to 4 pm. Monday through Wednesday and Friday, Thursday's until 5:30 pm.

2022 Summer Positions

The Leominster Recreation Department is now accepting applications for summer employment until April 1, 2022 or until the positions are filled for all programs. The positions for the 2022 season are as follows:

  • Full Day Summer Program / Leisure Counselors: Overseeing children ages ranging from 2.9 to 12: Must be 17 and older and available to work the last week of June through the second week of August. $15 to $16 per hour
  • Full Day Summer Program / Leisure Head Counselors: Planning activities along with overseeing staff and children ages ranging from 2.9 to 12: Must be 20 and older and available to work the last week of June through the second week of August. $17 to $18 per hour.
  • Pool Staff:
  • Seasonal Staff:
    • Summer Park Maintenance Workers to $15 to $17 per hour. Must be at least 18 years of age,
    • Summer Seasonal Flower Gardener Assistant part to time weekends $15 to $17 per hour. Must be at least 18 years of age.

Director of Recreation

Judith Sumner will be retiring this summer, after 28 years of service as the Recreation Director for the City of Leominster.

The city of Leominster, Massachusetts seeks qualified candidates for the position of Recreation Department Director. The city of Leominster is located in Northern Worcester County and approximately 50 miles northwest of Boston, with a population of 43,782.

The salary range is $69,926 to 90,246. The salary is enhanced with an extensive benefits package.

  • Reports to: Mayor of Leominster
  • Job duties: To include, but not limited to, the following responsibilities all in accordance with the Mayor's direction and subject to the Mayor's review. Works with the advisory Recreation Commission to set forth policies and procedures.
    • Responsible for the daily operation, management, and administrative functions of the Recreation Department.
    • Responsible for the recruitment, selection, training, assigning, supervision, and evaluation of all full-time, part-time, and seasonal staff. Recruits and oversees volunteers.
    • Aware of the community's recreational and leisure needs. Communicates with other community leisure service agencies and related organizations and offers any needed technical assistance. Maintains email communications. Oversees the Department's public information system and database system.
    • Oversees the planning, coordination, scheduling, and implementation of the Department's various recreational activities (athletic, cultural, events, educational, etc.) servicing the community's entire population. Markets and promotes recreational activities through various platforms.
    • Evaluates and seeks program recommendations from the Commission for their modification, deletion, or continuance. Submits reports to the Mayor and City Comptroller on program expenditures.
    • Oversees the use, upkeep, maintenance, and improvements of municipal parks, playgrounds, and the Leominster State Pool. Communicates to the proper agency, or assigns available work crews to, all needed site preparation, maintenance, and repair tasks at facilities to be used for Department programs and services. Pursues and oversees needed facility maintenance, development, and improvements. Is aware of all safety concerns and site use.
    • Responsible for the development of the Department's annual budget, in accordance with the parameters established. Is responsible for the overall fiscal management of the Department.
    • Responsible for seeking and managing state, federal, and private grant monies.
    • Oversees the coordination of departmental fundraising (sponsorship, contributions, etc.)
    • Oversees the inventory of renewable and capital supplies and equipment of the Department. Is responsible for all purchase requisitions, practicing applicable bid and quotation procedures.
    • Prepares reports for the Commission, Mayor, City Council, and other agencies, and represents the Department and/or Commission at meetings, hearings, etc., when necessary.
    • Represents the Department, and city, at various public and private functions and special committees. Represents the Department at state and national conferences and participates in professional improvements programs. Is familiar with leisure trends and current advancement in the field of recreation and leisure services.
    • Follows and enforces policies, procedures and regulations of the Commission while exercising tact, diplomacy, and firmness for effective relationships with superiors, subordinates, program participants, and the public. Makes recommendations to the Commission on all situations that affect the Department but are not specifically delineated in these job duties.

Qualifications Recommended:

  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation or related field
  • Five years of experience in the field of recreation and leisure service, three of which are in a supervisory and management capacity.
  • Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) and/or Certified Park and Recreation Executive (CPRE)
  • Certified in CPR and First Aid
  • Valid Drivers License

Work is performed under the general direction of the mayor and advisement from the Recreation Commission.
